Effect of BMGlvA2 on morphology of the spleen in mice. Mice were sacrificed 5 h after injection of E. coli K88 or LB medium. The spleen exhibited mild focal degeneration, necrosis, and expansion of splenic nodules in the white pulp area in the ETEC-challenged mice (mice in the same group showed the same trend). Red arrows indicate splenic node expansion, black arrow indicates germinal centers are not evident, blue arrow indicates focal degeneration and necrosis of lymphocytes in the white pulp area, green arrow indicates increased macrophages, gray arrows indicate decreased lymphocytes in the germinal center, yellow arrows indicate increased neutrophils in the red pulp area, purple arrow indicates decreased lymphocytes in the white pulp area
