The cycling disinfection procedure. The cycling disinfection procedure consisted of terminal cleaning and disinfection of each unit with 10% sodium hypochlorite for environmental surfaces and hydrogen peroxide in wipes for all medical devices, from upper corner to opposite lower corner starting from a transitory unit to be kept free. The common areas in the ICU were cleaned and disinfected, then the colonized patient was moved from his original unit to the transitory unit in order to have the patient’s original unit disinfected. In the transitory unit, the patient’s skin was disinfected with 2% leave-on chlorhexidine disposable cloths and he was transferred to his cleaned bed. Then the patient was relocated to the cleaned and disinfected original unit and the transitory unit was subsequently cleaned and disinfected. The whole process takes on average 6 h to be completed needing the recruitment of an additional nurse crew and dedicated cleaning staff
